Frequently Asked Questions

Why should votive candle holders always be used with votive candles?

Votive candles are designed to melt completely into a liquid form. Some votive candles (e.g. disposable) are made with an outer shell, often plastic, and the wax is contained in this shell. Other votive candles don’t have an outer shell, and using a votive holder will contain the liquid wax, preventing it from spilling and making a mess. Whether or not a votive candle has an outer shell, using a correctly-sized votive candle holder safeguards the candle flame from “jumping” to an adjacent candle or other nearby object, averting a possible fire hazard.

Are there any other reasons?

Yes. A correctly-sized votive candle holder shields the flame from surrounding air currents, letting the wax melt evenly and allowing the flame to draw the wax up and maximize the candle's burn time and performance.

Are there different sizes of votive holders?

Yes. Glass votive candle holders, often referred to as “10 hour” and “15 hour” glass, will both have a bottom diameter around 1-3/4" to accommodate most votive candle sizes. 10 hour glass, however, will have a height around 2” and can safely accommodate votive candles with burn times up to 10 hours, while 15 hour glass will have a height around 2-1/2” for votive candles with burn times up to 15 hours. 15 hour glass, however, is often used with votive candles having shorter burn times, often for aesthetic reasons.

Why are there different colors of votive holders and votive candles?

Using colored glass votive holders and votive candles lets you coordinate colors with the liturgical calendar (e.g. purple for Advent), patron saints, nationality, holidays (e.g. red, white and blue for the Fourth of July) or to match your church’s décor.
