Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Purpose of a Sanctuary Candle?

A sanctuary candle burns continuously inside a sanctuary lamp near the tabernacle to signal the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Because these candles must remain lit 24/7, reliability, minimal soot production, and predictable burn times are the primary performance requirements for parish sacristies.

What Is the Difference Between Glass and Plastic Sanctuary Candles?

  • Plastic Sanctuary Candles: Molded from shatterproof PVC or polycarbonate, these are the industry standard for daily use. They feature a tapered bottleneck top that limits exposure to open flame, preventing wax spills and eliminating the risk of broken glass if dropped during replacement.

  • Glass Sanctuary Candles: These feature an open-top glass cylinder. They provide a traditional presentation and are engineered to withstand the ambient heat inside a secondary metal or glass sanctuary globe without cracking.

Do You Offer Beeswax Sanctuary Candles?

Yes, we offer beeswax sanctuary candles. While paraffin candles are the economical choice for routine restocking, we carry premium 12% and 51% beeswax blended sanctuary candles from Root Candles, Dadant, and Will & Baumer.

What Burn Times Are Available?

  • 7-Day and 8-Day Candles: These are standard for active parishes because they align with a weekly altar guild or facility maintenance rotation. The 8-day option provides a 24-hour buffer to ensure the flame does not go out if the replacement schedule is delayed by one day.

  • 14-Day Candles: These double-length candles are designed for smaller chapels, side shrines, or rural parishes where the lamps are checked less frequently.

What Do the Different Candle Colors Signify?

The color of a sanctuary candle indicates its specific liturgical or devotional function. A ruby red Catholic sanctuary candle is required by custom to burn continuously near the tabernacle to signal the Real Presence of the Blessed Sacrament, while clear or white candles are standard for Eucharistic Adoration. We also offer a full spectrum of specialized colors for seasonal and devotional use: blue or Marian blue for Advent and feasts of the Virgin Mary, purple and rose for penitential seasons, and amber or green options for Ordinary Time or dedicated parish shrines.

Will These Candles Fit My Existing Sanctuary Lamp?

Yes. Our sanctuary candles are manufactured to standard ecclesiastical dimensions. They fit seamlessly into standard hanging, standing, or wall-mounted sanctuary globes.
