Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Purpose of a Catholic Chalice Pall?

A chalice pall is a rigid, square linen placed directly over the top of the chalice cup during Mass. It serves a practical and liturgical purpose by protecting the Eucharistic wine and hosts from dust, insects, or accidental contamination before and after the consecration. It is an essential component of formal altar preparation for Catholics, but is also used for some Anglican, Episcopal, and Lutheran traditions. Designs currently available include plain palls with no embroidery as well as styles featuring red cross, Greek cross, Jerusalem cross, or fleur-de-lis accents.

What Sizes of Chalice Palls Are Available?

Sizing depends entirely on the brand you select, which is an important consideration when matching your chalice diameter:

  • Abbey Brand: All chalice palls measure 6-1/2 inches square.

  • R.J. Toomey: All chalice palls measure 7 inches square.

Are the Plastic Inserts Included, and Can They be Removed?

Yes. Every product in our collection includes a matching removable plastic insert (Abbey Brand uses rigid white inserts; R.J. Toomey uses clear inserts). The inserts fit into a pocket in the linen cover, providing structural stiffness. They can be easily slipped out when the linen fabric needs laundering.

How Many Catholic Palls Come in a Single Package?

Our Catholic palls and inserts are sold in bundle quantities rather than individually. Abbey Brand palls are packaged in sets of 3. R.J. Toomey palls are packaged in sets of 4 (Jerusalem Cross and Fleur-de-lis designs) or 12 (traditional Red Cross designs). Please verify the package count on the product listing to ensure you order the right quantity for your sacristy.

What Is the Difference Between a Catholic Chalice Pall and a Chalice Veil?

A chalice pall is the rigid square piece placed directly over the chalice cup, while a chalice veil is the larger decorative cloth draped over the chalice and paten before Mass or until the Offertory. They serve different purposes but are often used together in more formal liturgical settings.

Are These the Same as a Catholic Pall for a Funeral?

No. A Catholic pall can refer to more than one liturgical textile. Our chalice pall collection is for the Catholic chalice pall used on the altar during Mass. It does not include the Catholic funeral pall or Catholic casket pall, which are the larger cloths placed over a casket or urn during funeral rites. We carry those separately in our Funeral & Urn Palls collection. These palls are also used in Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran, and other liturgical traditions that observe a formal Eucharistic service, so they are not limited to Catholic parishes.

How Should I Care for a Chalice Pall?

Care instructions vary based on the fabric blend and embroidery. Always review the care instructions on the specific product page before ordering.

  • Abbey Brand (Linen-Cotton & Poly-Cotton): These are machine-washable and dryable once the plastic insert is removed.

  • R.J. Toomey (100% Linen & 100% Cotton): Dry cleaning is recommended to preserve the embroidery. If machine washing, use cold water on a gentle cycle without bleach, and iron while damp. Always remove the plastic insert before cleaning.
