Frequently Asked Questions

Why do people light votive candles?

Lighting a votive candle is a reverent and symbolic act to extend your prayers and intentions. The light of the candle symbolizes Christ as "the Light of the World" and is a visible, continuous offering to God, expressing your devotion and keeping a prayerful intention before Him even when you're not physically present to pray.

Why are there so many different kinds of votive candles?

Three immediate reasons would be a church’s or an individual’s preferences for burn time, convenience and appearance. More specifically, votive candle burn times can range from 2 hours up to 7 days (longer burn times are sometimes called devotional candles); convenience, as some types of votive candles are disposable (easy removal and replacement once candle is consumed); and appearance, as votive candles and holders are available in a variety of colors to match the liturgical seasons, holidays or other specific needs (see below).

Should votive candles be used with an outer votive holder?

Yes. To maximize candle performance and safety, votive candles should always be used with a permanent votive holder, typically made from glass.

Why are there different colors of votive candles and votive holders?

Using colored votive candles and glass votive holders lets you to coordinate colors with the liturgical calendar (e.g. purple for Advent), patron saints, nationality, holidays (e.g. red, white and blue for the Fourth of July) or to match your church’s décor.

Will burning a votive candle in an enclosed area (your church, for example) damage or stain ceilings, fabrics, or nearby furnishings and appointments?

A good-quality votive candle uses blended waxes and centered wicks to ensure clean, smokeless, and trouble-free burning.
