Pulpit Scarfs

These scarves are available in all primary liturgical colors: Purple, Red, White, Green, and Blue. Pulpit scarves are used to display the colors of the current liturgical season, such as Purple for Lent or Green for Ordinary Time. They are placed on the pulpit or lectern where the Word is preached. Because many R.J. Toomey styles are reversible, a single scarf can be flipped to transition between seasons, such as moving from the White of Easter to the Red of Pentecost.

The primary difference lies in their use: a pulpit scarf hangs from the pulpit, while a clergy stole is a vestment worn over the shoulders by a member of the clergy. A pulpit scarf is significantly wider at 18 inches than a stole to ensure it is visible to the congregation from the front of the sanctuary.

R.J. Toomey pulpit scarves are made from 100% polyester in either smooth-weave or jacquard finishes. To protect the metallic embroidery and the gold fringe, these items are dry-clean only. For long-term care, store them flat or draped over a padded hanger to prevent deep creasing in the fabric.

A pulpit scarf should be centered on the pulpit or lectern. The 36-inch length allows a portion of the scarf to rest on the flat surface of the pulpit, often held in place by a pulpit Bible or a weighted rod, while the embroidered portion hangs straight down the front.
